Build Your Own: Surfboard Workshop with Grain Surfboards Thursday, November 1, 8:00 am

Craft your very own surfboard using sustainable materials at this four day workshop.

There’s nothing quite like catching the perfect wave. Now, imagine catching that perfect wave on a surfboard you crafted with your own two hands.

Join us at The Ecology Center November 1st – 4th as Nolan Collins of Grain Surfboards guides you through a multi-day workshop to craft your own wood surfboard. Work side by side with Grain’s builders to create a board using timeless woodworking techniques and sustainably grown and harvested cedar from the state of Maine. Sustainable softwood helps to naturally produce artful grain patterns on every board making each board unique. Learn new skills and meet new members in our community at this 4-day workshop on our idyllic grounds at The Ecology Center.

HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:

The workshop begins with you choosing your model of board from over a dozen options shared by the Grain Surfboards. Then you’ll start the building process with a board, frame already glued to the bottom planks. Grain Surfboards experts will work with you to establish the desired outline of the board by laying down the foundation. Over the next few days, you’ll work to build up the rails, install blocking for hardware, attach the top planks and finally shape and sand your board.

Enjoy a farm-to-table breakfast and lunch each day along with plenty of time to get to know other workshop attendees. Demo boards will be available for pre or post-class surf sessions at Doheny Beach (1 mile from The Ecology Center) or your favorite surf spot in the area. All tools, materials, and food are included in the price of this workshop, see below for more details.

Glassing is not included in this workshop, however, you will be provided with contact information of local glassers so you know where to finish your board.
